Background regarding the former store follows...

The store is conveniently located in the DuPont Circle area of Washington DC. Rich in history and surrounded by many art galleries within walking distance, fine resturants, theaters, office buildings, theaters, apartments, and embassies.

"I chose Dupont Circle because I saw the many hotels, museums, bookstores and galleries located there, " Rosemary said. "In 1966, the area was quite racially and economically mixed, however I did not know-because I was not from Washington-that blacks did not live and have businesses on the west side of Connecticut Ave. Such are the protocols of black and white America."

She found resistance from the landladies to rent to her. She asked the DC office of Human Rights to help. The landladies told the official that they were not discriminating, but they thought she was "too young" to be serious. Rosemary was in her twenties.
